TL;DR A good petition states the problem in simple words, gives facts, asks for a specific outcome, and uses a respectful tone. It is addressed to the right authority. This guide helps you write one.
Structure of a petition
- Problem: What is wrong, in common man language. Where is it? Who is affected?
- Facts: What you know (e.g. timeline, official response so far). No rumours.
- Request: What you want the authority to do (e.g. repair by date, publish timeline, set up helpline).
- Closing: Respectful — “We request that this representation be considered.”
What to avoid
No personal attacks, no abusive language, no threats. Critique the policy or process, not individuals. Sign off with your name (or “We, the undersigned”) and contact so the authority can respond.
